Modern Rheumatology in Iran began about four decades ago. Before the rheumatic patients were observed by all physicians, particularly internal, nerve specialists, and orthopedic surgeons, rheumatology specialist activities Began in the early decades of the 40th in Tehran by dr. Saeed Bani Hashemi, dr. Amir Khan Shafi Zadeh, dr. F. Davachi, etc.
Rheumatology Education began in 1968 by Dr. Mohammad Shafizade at the National University and in 1970 by Dr. Davachi at Tehran University. Then, it was established in 1971 by Dr. Eghtedari at the University of Shiraz, in 1976 by Dr. Naseh at Mashhad University, and in 1979 by Dr. Forghanizade at the University of Iran.
The rheumatology subspecialty center was officially launched at the University of Mashhad in 1988 by Dr. Hatef. Before that, students education and treating rheumatic patients were managed in Mashhad by Dr. Farid Hosseini and Dr. Saghafi.
Now, in two hospitals of Qaem (as) and Imam Reza (AS), Academic, research, and treatment activities are performed.
